Causes and Risk Factors:

• Genetic predisposition: Certain genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome and Li-Fraumeni syndrome, increase the chance of developing leukemia.
• Exposure to chemicals and radiation: Excessive exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene, as well as radiation therapy or nuclear bomb explosions, may increase the risk.
• Family history: Although most cases of leukemia are not inherited, having a family member with the disease increases your risk.
• Immune system disorders: Risk may be increased by certain autoimmune diseases or disorders that compromise immune function.
